Kern County jails are run by the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. When someone is arrested and taken into custody in the Kern County area, they will be taken to the nearest police station/jail for booking and processing. Once complete, bail will be set for those who are eligible and bonds can be posted.

This is the facility where inmates are taken who are arrested in the Bakersfield area. Typically, inmates are held here that are awaiting release either via bail bond or their first court appearance. If an individual is to remain in custody after their first court date, they are usually transferred to the Lerdo Facility.

The Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility is a higher security jail than central receiving and houses inmates awaiting their court appearance. Many defendants housed at the Lerdo Facility are eligible for bail.

This facility houses both men and women and is used for inmates who do not require a higher security facility.

Lerdo Max-Med Facility

The Lerdo Max-Med facility is used on an “as needed” basis to house overflow from the other Lerdo Facilities. It houses pre-trial inmates, some of whom will be eligible for bail.

Mojave Substation

The Mojave Substation is an extremely small facility used to house arrestees in the Mojave area. If/when this jail fills up, arrestees will be taken to the Bakersfield jail.

Ridgecrest Substation

Like the Mojave Substation, the Ridgecrest Substation Jail is used to house inmates who have been arrested in Mojave. When the Ridgecrest Substation is full, overflow is taken to the Bakersfield Jail.
