Do you have plans for Cinco de Mayo yet this year? It’s coming fast. Luckily, if you live in Los Angeles County, or anywhere near it, you have a ton of options. As home to the largest Cinco de Mayo street fair in the world, the city of Los Angeles knows how to celebrate when it comes to holidays. After all, what better way to commemorate Mexico’s defeat of the French than to take to the streets and celebrate the history and heritage of our neighbors to the south?
From the Fiesta Broadway in downtown LA, to the celebration on Olvera Street, to the multitudes of Cinco de Mayo drink specials at restaurants all over Los Angeles, there’s no dearth of options from which to choose.
Speaking of drink specials, Cinco de Mayo is often synonymous with drinking – and that’s totally fine. In this warm Southern California weather, a margarita or two will definitely hit the spot. If you do choose to drink, though, make sure that you’ve lined yourself up a safe ride home. As with most holiday celebrations, there’s a spike in DUI-related collisions and arrests in the days leading up to, and even after, Cinco de Mayo. The LAPD and LASD will be conducting saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints to ensure that anyone who chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be doing so for long. Nothing puts a damper on one’s holiday cheer than winding up in jail.
